DIY tips for those who like to do the home maintenance. Owning a home comes with a list of maintenance jobs. Hiring someone can be expensive so you try to take care of them yourself. Quite often as the home settles there will be caulking that opens and screw pops in drywall. The home warranty usually takes care of some of these in the first year. Confirm with your contractor or realtor if you've purchased a new home. If you've purchased a pre owned home you may have your hands full. Caulking gaps both inside and out are important to prevent drafts and in some cases leaking. Its not as complicated as some might think. The key to not making a mess is cutting the nozzle. There are usually lines on the end of the nozzle marked 1/8 and 1/4. I recommend cutting on the 1/8 line on a 45 degree angle. If you cut too much the hole is too big and its everywhere. Smaller hole, less mess. Use the nozzle to tool the caulking by using the caulking gun on the 45degree angle. Watch for a build up as you go to know whether to slow down or go faster. Keep a damp rag with you to clean up the excess. But the key to this job is not cutting too much off that nozzle. Cut a little at a time if you have to but don't take too much. Take your time. Welcome to home maintaining joy! 😉
